CPCB Guidelines for STP & ETP

Understand the latest Central Pollution Control Board rules for sewage and effluent treatment plants in India.

What Are CPCB Guidelines?

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) issues wastewater treatment guidelines to ensure treated water meets environmental discharge and reuse standards. These rules apply to STPs and ETPs across India.

Key Discharge Norms (Indicative)

BOD

≤ 10 mg/L for reuse
≤ 30 mg/L for disposal

COD

≤ 50 mg/L for reuse
≤ 250 mg/L for disposal

TSS & pH

TSS ≤ 10 mg/L
pH range: 6.5 – 8.5

Mandatory Compliance Requirements

  • ✔ Online pH, flow & quality monitoring
  • ✔ Treated water reuse or safe disposal
  • ✔ Sludge handling and disposal records
  • ✔ SPCB consent to establish & operate
  • ✔ Periodic water quality testing

What Happens If CPCB Norms Are Not Met?

Legal Action

Show-cause notices and plant shutdown risk

Financial Loss

Heavy penalties and operational disruption

Reputation Damage

Loss of approvals and client trust
